We have not stopped—asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his
will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order
that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way:
—growing in the knowledge of God.
Colossians 1:9-10
How in the world can I know God’s will? Seems to me, that is
what growing in the knowledge of God is
all about. Perfect timing, Spirit. In both instances, knowledge in the Greek is epignosis,
full discernment, suggestive of intimacy with God. And the word used for will here is thelema, which is loaded with pleasure—what God desires (wills), is
certain to be pleasing to Him.
Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest June 3, links God’s secret joys with His will. As you become intimate with the Lord, He will let you in on His secret joys. Chambers’ very important question is this: “Are we so wedded to Jesus Christ's idea of prayer—‘Thy will be done’, that we catch the secrets of God?”
Scripture chimes in with things that get in our way of
knowing God’s will and things that help: Do
not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s
will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:2). Way to line it
up for me, Word!
Focus, focus then, away from the pattern of this world. Be
transformed by the renewing of your mind!
I renew my mind by spending time in the study of God’s word. I listen carefully
with the Spirit’s ear. I am intent on discovering God’s secret joys, for His
will can be nothing but good, pleasing and perfect.
I sincerely wish to grow in the
knowledge of You Lord, to be filled with the knowledge of Your will.
