This is the day the Lord has made; let us
rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:24
My husband entered the house yesterday from his volunteer
job and found me sitting in my favorite chair with a snarl on my face. “What’s
wrong?” he asked. “I can tell that you are down.”
“Well, you just won’t believe my day,” I replied. Then, I
began to complain. “I had my day all planned and nothing worked out. I feel
that I just wasted this day and didn’t accomplish anything,” I added.
By nature, I am an organized, structured person. I don’t
like it when my plans go awry. I know that is not a good trait, and my being
too structured is one of the things I want to work on this year. Here we are in
the first month of the new year, and I have already forgotten my goal. No
wonder my day went wrong. God gave me an opportunity to make a change in my
life, and I didn’t take it.
We make a poor choice when we try to control our days. In
fact, we can even make an idol of routine and schedules. One of my prayers for
2013 is that God will show me my mistakes, my sins, my shortcomings and guide
me into making better choices. This was lesson number one!
We seem to find security when we put boundaries around our
lives. Instead of seeking God’s guidance for the day, we already have it laid
out before we go to Him. In fact we can be so “scheduled” that we don’t leave
room for God.
God spoke to me about this yesterday after I felt my day had
fallen apart. He reminded me that I should accept each day as it comes and seek
His plans for me. He is sovereign over my life. We add stress to our lives when
we want our days to work out just like we think they should.
Each day is a gift from God. We should rejoice and be glad
in it.
