faithfulness, you have done marvelous
things, things planned long ago.
Isaiah 25:1
Recently I was reading from my older Bible and noticed
several dates from the fall of 2001 written beside different verses. I am confident of this: I will see the
goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong
and take heart and wait for the LORD (Psalm 27:13-14). I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has
passed (Psalm 57:1). Save me, O God,
for the waters have come up to my neck…I am worn out calling for help… (Psalm
69:1, 3). I dated these verses, signifying I was clinging to them in the midst
of difficulty.
I grieved as my oldest daughter left for college. The
following week, my husband was diagnosed with melanoma. Because of college
expenses, it became apparent I would need to work part-time. I was involved in
a time-consuming ministry. How could I add anything to my schedule? Then on
9-11 our nation watched in horror as the Twin Towers fell. Our nation plunged
into grief. The following week my dog, my sweet companion of 10 years, died.
Then a few weeks later a pipe underneath our house leaked, causing the
foundation to crack. Initially, the insurance company denied the claim.
I wish I could say that during these difficulties my trust
in God never wavered, but the truth is periodically I stumbled into a pit of
doubt and despair. Have you ever been there? Are you there now?
In that pit I cried out to God, clinging to His promises. In
the darkness of the pit, His faithfulness began to shine. He showed me that
even though there are times I am faithless, He is always faithful. I learned
God is my unshakable foundation amidst any difficulty.
In His time,
God rescued me from the pit. I came out changed with a renewed and deepened
song of God’s faithfulness. With certainty I can declare, If we are faithless, He will remain faithful, for He cannot disown
Himself. (2 Timothy 2:13)
What about you? Have you learned the song of God’s
faithfulness?
