Summer Vacation

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up
Galatians 6:9

My grandparents’ home was a hotel. They owned and operated it in Jacksonville, Florida. My mother, father, brother, and I would spend a week with them every summer. I realize now this wasn’t the typical “to grandmother’s house we go” experience.

One summer when we were visiting my grandparents, a nearby church held Vacation Bible School. Someone decided sending me there would be a good way to occupy my time. Consequently, on Monday morning I was dropped off at the church.

I was seven years old and shy with strangers. Meeting a roomful of them was not in my comfort zone. As I stood frozen in the doorway, a teacher looked up and spotted me. Catching my eye, she smiled a welcome and quickly walked over to where I was.

Her voice was gentle as she asked my name and said she was glad I’d come. Taking my hand, she led me around the room, introducing me to the other teachers. They were equally kind and friendly. I began to relax.

I was happy that week and looked forward to each day. When VBS ended, I’m sure my teachers didn’t know how much it had meant to me. Perhaps they wondered if the all the effort had made a difference in God’s kingdom.

Actually, it made a great difference in my life. During VBS I learned God loved me. The seed was planted then that led to my later trusting in Christ.

All of us may wonder at times if our service for the Lord is of any consequence. When we are discouraged or tempted to quit, God’s Word reminds us, Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9).

Father, serving You is our joy and privilege.
