Mary, Did You Know?

You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name of Jesus.
Luke 1:31

“I am the Lord’s servant”, Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.”
Luke 1:38a

Mark Lowery wrote a beautiful song entitled, “Mary, Did You Know?” which has become a very popular song. He poses questions to Mary regarding some of the days ahead.

When the angel, Gabriel, came to Nazareth to deliver God’s message to Mary, she was troubled. Well, wouldn’t you be? She was a young virgin already betrothed to Joseph. But the angel comforted her. Even with that, did she have any hint of the life-changing events in her future?

Can you even begin to put yourself in Mary’s sandals? When it’s clear that God is directing us, (if He sends an angel to us) what is our thinking?
  • God, that’s really too much for me. What will people think?
  • I need to pray about this.
  • Oh, I know that would be a blessing, but what will people think?
  • And you know, I’m really busy.
Does this sound like you? It surely does sound like me. Can we remind ourselves of Mary’s response? During this holy season, re-read Mary’s song, often called the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55). Does God hear us singing?

Oh, Heavenly father, thank you for Mary’s story. Her response is an example of a godly woman with strong faith. Please help me to be used for your purpose, to be a blessing to others.
