Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.
Psalm46: 10
Picture this. It is a
cold 25-degree morning. You are sitting
in a quiet, warm room. There is no
traffic outside. Everything is
still. There is such a feeling of peace
around you. That is exactly where I am
today as I write this devotion. I can
feel God’s arms around me. Why don’t I
do this more often?
We don’t seem to have many of these “still times,” do
we? Our society doesn’t really know how
to “be still.” Our lives are busy and
noisy. Our homes are noisy. We will
all agree that traffic is noisy.
We must not allow the busyness of our lives to separate us
from God’s peace. If we are to maintain righteous minds and compassionate
hearts, we must take time each day for prayer and meditation. God tells us to quiet our minds so that He
can speak to us. We need time to reflect. Just as our bodies and minds need rest, so does our soul.
Do you have a devotional life, a quiet time with God? We need to make some still time each day to
read the Word, worship God, and pray. I
find the early mornings to be best for me. This quiet time alone with God will put
us in contact with reality--the things that will last. We often spend too much time on things that
have no eternal value.
In these still times, just read the Word and receive it as
though God is speaking to you personally. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you into the truth God wants you to receive
in this quiet time.
The beginning of a new year is a good time to make “still
times” in your life. Times of stillness can be a great teacher. Best of all,
they are times where God can speak to us.
Father, I pray for a
strong desire to spend time with you each day.
