“For I am convinced that neither
death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future,
nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our
Lord.”
Romans
8:38-39
Love. It makes the world go round, right? We listen to songs about love, and we read novels that include love stories. Romantic comedies or dramas draw people to the movie theaters in droves. But what if you don't feel loved?
I felt
unloved and unlovable for most of my life. Perhaps it was because I did not have the love of my Father. Having such a void in my soul left me feeling
rejected and abandoned. I went through most of my life trying to fill that deep
void within me through relationships, which left me feeling just as empty
when they did not work out. I typically found myself in relationships in which I would ultimately be rejected, and this just poured salt into my wounds.
The love
issue is a big one. Rejection and
abandonment can cause such deep-rooted damage to one's soul that it sometimes
takes years of counseling with a professional to find healing. There is no one who doesn’t want or need
love, especially if it was missing during developmental years.
The good
news is we don’t have to go through this life feeling unloved. The truth is we do have someone who loves
us; God. The Bible teaches that nothing can separate us
from the love of God (Romans 8:38). The love of man will fail us at
times, but God’s love will never fail. If we continue to attempt to fill the void within our hearts with just
the love of people, we will come up disappointed every time. God is the only one who can love us
unconditionally.
Knowing there is
nothing we can do to cause Him to reject us or to lose His love, brings a peace
that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). With a true
understanding of God’s love for us, we can find healing for damaged emotions.
Thank you, God, that we can depend on Your constant and unconditional love for us.
