But
those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings
like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:31
Good morning ladies. My
girlfriends and I want to entice you into pursuing wonder. As the title of
Margaret Feinberg’s book suggests, we have been Wonderstruck as we have opened our eyes and ears to the presence of
God. We invite you to join the chase.
Personally the timing was perfect,
with my husband and I taking off last June on a three-month road trip to
celebrate our fiftieth. Fifty years—now that’s a lot of wonder, although not often
of the moment. Pinpointing God in the minutia was more a matter of hindsight.
But that’s just the way it is
with circumstances. They make perfect sense when looking back. If only we’d
recognized God at work; if only we’d turned over the pesky detail along the way.
Would not our sense of divine wonder renew our strength instantly?
True to human nature, seeing
God everywhere takes expectation, and practice. Fortunately, creation can hit you
squarely between the eyes with the greatness of God. As the miles ticked by, all
7493 of them, God did not disappoint us. Wonder upon wonder unfolded as rocky
precipice gave way to clear blue lake to colossal sand dunes to forests’
canopy. S-o-o-o awesome!
And how about God’s creatures?
How could an eagle in flight not impress you with its Creator? I spied aerodynamic
elegance as I walked along the rocky beach of Puget Sound, way up there, sleek,
streamlined, soaring on a current of air. The white of its head pointed sharply
forward; the stretch of its wing span was immense, while its white tail
feathers balanced the symmetry from behind.
Many of you have watched the
Eagle Cams of recent years and been intrigued with the care of mom and dad for
the young. Scripture pictures God’s care for us similarly: like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that
spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions
(Deuteronomy 32:11).
O God, I want to soar like that eagle on the currents
of Your presence, safe and secure.
