Come to me, all you who are weary and
burdened, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
Sometimes the Lord lets a thought or word hang in my mind so that I can really consider His truth. It’s a little like getting a song stuck in your mind that you can’t shake, except way better. Recently I have been thinking about the word, come. I did a quick search on the Internet and found that come is a high frequency word in the Bible, possibly mentioned over 2000 times.
Every
night when my son heads to his room for bed, he says, “Mom, come on.” This
means he wants me to be with him. He wants my presence before he goes to sleep.
God also wants our presence when he says, "come." He wants to meet
our needs, to be our Comforter, to be with us.
When
Jesus walked on water, Peter asked to join him, and Jesus said, “Come” (Matthew
14:29). Jesus also told his disciples to let the little children come to Him
(Matthew 19:14). This time of year we focus on the birth of Christ, how he chose to come as an infant to set us free. He is always inviting, always desiring us. He wants us to
accept this invitation, but that’s simply what it is . . . an invitation. There
is no demand when He says, “come.” But when you come, you will find rest,
peace, hope, and joy.
So
I read the final chapter of Revelation the other day, the final chapter of the
Bible. One of the last things John writes is, Come, Lord Jesus. This is
our response, Come, Lord Jesus. One day Jesus will return to this Earth to be
King. He will appear in the sky, coming in the clouds with great glory (Matthew
24:30). I am looking forward to the Day my Lord Jesus comes in the clouds. What
a Day that will be!
Come,
Lord Jesus. What a perfect response to God’s Word. God’s character and His
promises are described page after page, His love and life woven throughout. He
invites us time and time again to come. Our response? Come, Lord Jesus!
Come, Lord Jesus.
