These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.
1 Corinthians 10:11
Don’t you love a good story? Mystery, romance, intrigue, triumph.
The scene begins with the protagonist, or main character, content in life. Out of nowhere, she is knocked off course by some unforeseen situation. We follow the protagonist through various twists and turns as the story unfolds. We wait with bated breath as we cheer her on. Will she know happiness again? Or is she destined to a life of misery?
The Bible is replete with exciting stories of protagonists just like you and me. They overcame tremendous adversity. I Corinthians 10:11 tells us the stories written in the Bible are examples for us. Some warn us; some encourage us. They all proclaim the enduring faithfulness of God.
Joseph’s brothers tossed him into a pit and then sold him to foreign slave traders. Who would have dreamed he would one day save these same brothers from certain doom? Many years and trials arose before this feat, however. He endured rejection, loneliness, prison, false accusations and other trials.
Let’s put ourselves in Joseph’s shoes. He was a teenage boy whose life was turned upside down. He had been a favored son; now he was a lowly slave. He had lived among familiarity and family; now he lived in a foreign country with strangers. I might have had a pity party or two. How about you? But God wasn’t finished penning his story!
He’s not finished with yours either. God designed a story uniquely yours. You have the leading role! It is a beautiful epic, full of adventure, hardships and mystery. It will likely include joy, sadness, love, betrayal, belief, despair, perseverance, failure, success, and so much more. Jesus is by your side whether you are celebrating life or struggling in despair. He yearns for you to succeed at each step of your journey.
Let’s stand up, unsheathe our swords and slay some dragons! With God, the impossible becomes possible!
