Church Sunday

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Hebrews 10:24-25

“Church Sunday” – the first time I saw that sign in front of a small church on my way to work it annoyed me. Church Sunday! How ridiculous to put that on their marquis! Of course, church is on Sunday. Everyone knows that!

The next day, there it was again – Church Sunday. This time my heart began to soften as I thought about the real message of that sign. Day after day the sign did not change, but my attitude about it certainly did.

Sure, most people do know that church is on Sunday. Many people have even been on occasion, but how many people these days make it a priority? So many other things and events compete for that time.

Church on Sunday allows me to recharge my spiritual batteries which have often become used up in our ungodly world. I experience God in a collaborative way with brothers and sisters in Christ as I worship together with them. I learn Biblical truths as my pastor speaks from God’s word. I am also, as the Hebrews passage says, encouraged.

I am encouraged to keep up the faith. I am lifted up during hard times and I rejoice with others in the good times. Being around other Christians lets me know that I am not alone and that God is at work in them. It is more evidence of God’s existence.

Now when I pass the sign I smile. What started out as an annoyance now brings me great joy when I see it. I believe that sign did exactly what it was intended to do – bring attention to what should be a priority – Church Sunday.

Church Sunday – why sure. Let’s do it!
