Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baca,
they make it a place of springs…
Psalm 84:5-6
Our journey through life with Jesus sometimes takes us through the Valley of Baca. From the context, we understand this to be a desert region. This valley can spiritually represent those places that are void of truth and godliness. However, the root word for Baca means “to weep,” so this valley can also represent times of difficulty.
I would prefer to skirt around these valleys, wouldn’t you? But the psalmist says “as” we pass through, not “if” we pass through; and so, encountering desert regions and difficulties is inevitable. The psalmist doesn’t present these valleys as something to merely endure. He presents them as opportunities: …they make it a place of springs… (Psalm 84:6).
Today you will encounter someone who is void of truth and godliness. That person is in a spiritual desert. Whether he knows it or not, he has a thirst within his soul that nothing can satisfy. Will you seize the opportunity to introduce him to Jesus, Who can become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life? (John 4:14)
Perhaps today you will encounter a person going through great difficulty. Your intimate fellowship with Jesus has equipped you with knowledge of His character that will bring encouragement to that one who is hurting. As you share God’s truth and promises, you impart wisdom and strength to those in need.
Or perhaps, you, believer, are the one going through the valley of difficulty. You have a unique opportunity to impact others spiritually. As you display the character of Jesus and trust in God, others will notice. Believers will recognize God in you and be strengthened. But unbelievers will look on with amazement. They will see in you that which the world does not offer. Will you show them Jesus?
Lord, as I pass through the valleys, let your living water flow through me to impact others.
