Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my
daily bread. Otherwise I may have too much and disown you…Or I may become poor
and steal.
Proverbs 30:7-9
Our small group of women had been meeting for several weeks.
Today we were studying what the Bible taught about material possessions and
contentment.
Several of us admitted we found it hard to be satisfied
living within our incomes. We wanted more “things”.
Kathy was a young wife and mother in the group. Her eyes
twinkled mischievously as she said, “I knew I was in trouble when my husband
told me he didn’t ever want to be rich.”
When we stopped chuckling, she went on to explain.
Her husband, Nathan, understood that wealth might cause him
to take his eyes off the Lord. His relationship with Christ was his priority.
He didn’t want that to change.
We were all impressed with the wisdom and depth of
commitment of this young man.
Another wise man said about possessions, “…Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise I may have too much and disown you…Or I may become poor and steal…” (Proverbs 30:7-9). In other words, the writer of Proverbs 30 knew his limitations.
He also understood temptation. If we have too much, we may
forget God. With too little, we may be tempted to steal. If we succumb to
either, we sin.
When it comes to material possessions, danger can lie in the
extremes.
Father, Thank You for supplying all our needs and
blessing us with spiritual riches.
Carol
