Jesus looked at them and
said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God;
all things are possible with God."
Mark 10:27
A crowd
of over 5,000 had gathered to hear Jesus teach. As evening approached, Jesus
and His disciples knew the crowd needed to eat. The disciples wanted to send
the people away, but instead, Jesus asked Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for
these people to eat?” (John 6:5) Jesus already knew He was going to multiply a
few pieces of bread and fish to feed the people; but first, He asked this
question of Philip to test his faith. Philip quickly calculated how much money
it would take to feed the crowd and then responded, “Eight months’ wages would
not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” (John 6:7) Philip’s
calculation was correct from a human perspective. However, his answer showed a
lack of faith. Philip left Jesus out of the equation! He neglected to consider
the power and ability of God.
At times I am just like Philip. A difficulty arises and I
begin calculating first one solution and then another. When I see no acceptable
solution, I worry or panic. At times I even find myself in the pit of despair.
Can you relate?
Jesus was teaching Philip to stop looking at circumstances
merely from a human perspective. He was teaching Philip and the other disciples
to trust in Him. It is in the difficulties of life that you and I best learn to
trust God. It is in the situations where no human solution is visible that
God’s power and provision are made manifest to us.
What has Jesus asked of you that is testing your faith? Has
He allowed you to encounter a situation where you see no solution in order that
you will learn to figure Him into the equation? Has He called you to serve Him
in a way in which you do not feel equipped so that you can trust Him to
multiply what He has already given you?
Will you step out in faith, remembering His ability and His power? If
you do, you will see the power and provision of God displayed clearly.
Thank You, Lord Jesus,
for allowing us to encounter difficult situations so that our faith in You can
be deepened. Help us to trust in You
daily. When we experience Your provision and power, may we be quick to lift
Your Name in praise!
