But mark this: There will be terrible times in the
last days. People
will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive,
disobedient to their parents, ungrateful unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous,
without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of
pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power.
2 Timothy 3:1-5
To those of us who love the Lord and try to live Christian
lives, our society seems like a sick and dying entity. I have often thought how God must look down
upon us and grieve. A few years ago I served on the Grand Jury for six months.
Every kind of lawlessness and perversion was brought to our jury. It was
horrifying! I was appalled.
Yet, I know many wonderful people. What can we do about the
mess our culture has become? What can I
do? It just seems so hopeless at times.
What I try to do when I am disturbed over things is to go to
God's word and search for answers. The
Bible reminds me that people have always been evil and done evil things, but
God sent his Son, Jesus, to change individual hearts. He came not to change the world, but to
change individuals: specifically me.
Change me, Lord Jesus, and through me, the World. How?
Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue
righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord
out of a pure heart. Don’t
have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they
produce quarrels. And
the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able
to teach, not resentful. Opponents
must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance
leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses
and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his
will.
