Studying With Soap

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans 15:4

Do you long for more Bible study time? The minutes and hours that you spend in His word are so rich, yet your time seems to slip away?  encouraging.com is designed for those of us who yearn for that quiet time in the midst of obligations.

A few months ago, a study suggestion was shared with me. It is a pattern for daily study when time may be limited. It’s called S.O.A.P.

Start by opening your Bible as the Holy Spirit leads you. Perhaps you are reading consecutively, so you will continue with that.  Write the scripture down and read it out loud. If your surroundings don’t permit that, just read it again in your thoughts.

S -             Give the scripture a title or a word that you need for the day.

O-            Write your general observation.

A-            Application – how can I apply this to my life?

P-            Your praise and/or prayer

Got your soap ready? Let’s go with an example.

Scripture – Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.    (Isaiah 60:1)

S-            Shine

O-            His glory is on me.  I will be radiant and joyful.

A-            I can shine today because I know that His glory is already on me. Am I reflecting that?

P-            Father, I praise You and thank You for the light that You have given to me. I yearn for more understanding.

Remember Mikey in the cereal commercial? “He likes it!” Try using S.O.A.P. You’ll like it. You’ll be blessed.
