Experiencing Peace

I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33

“My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far today, I have finished 2 bags of M&M’s and a chocolate cake. I feel better already.” This is a funny quote, but is true inner peace found by finishing what we start? Perhaps this results in temporary peace, but true peace is found only in Jesus. However, there is something you and I can do to experience His peace.

In John 16:33, Jesus said, I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. Jesus knew within a few hours He would be crucified. Therefore, He told His disciples exactly what they needed for the dark hour approaching. He carefully spoke words that would prepare them, as well as comfort and strengthen them later.

He told His disciples He was going back to the Father, but that He would prepare a place for them to be with Him. He promised He wouldn’t leave them alone, but that He would send the Holy Spirit, the Counselor, to be in them. He emphasized the importance of remaining in a vibrant relationship with Him in order to bear eternal fruit and to endure coming persecution.

Jesus said, But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you… (John 14:26-27). There is a direct correlation between God’s Word and peace.

Jesus’ words brought peace to His disciples then, even as God’s Word brings peace to you and me today. Repeatedly, I am amazed that the scripture I am reading and studying is the very message I need for encouragement, strength, assurance and peace.

Whose words do you turn to in times of darkness--the words of a friend, a professional or even a human author? What can you do to experience true inner peace, even amidst turmoil? Cling to scripture! As you read, meditate and study the Bible, God will counsel you, instruct you and assure you. Amazingly, you will experience His peace!
