Be Strong!

She is strong and able to do all her work.
Proverbs 31: 17

I’ve read this verse many times and never really thought much about it. I know I’m supposed to do my work.

But as I pondered lessons in the Proverbs, this time I thought about the verse in a very practical way.

The verse says she is strong so that she can do all her work.

I started a strength training class about nine months ago. My instructor (who is also a cancer survivor) kept telling us that we would gain strength to help us in our daily lives. And she was right! For instance, now I can carry more grocery bags into the house. I can also move heavier things like ladders and boxes, which previously I might have asked my husband to move.

There are ladies of all shapes, sizes, and ages in my class. Some are well into their 70s. Some have even been able to get off various medications for high blood pressure, diabetes and more. We’re all at different levels of physical fitness but working toward better health.

I have to admit that sometimes I’m still surprised when the Bible speaks in such a practical way.

Strength training has all kinds of benefits including helping arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, back pain, and depression.

Of course, you should check with your doctor or trainer before starting a strength training program. You can find classes at church, nearby community centers, and fitness facilities. You never know what you’re capable of until you try!

Lord, thank you for giving us such practical advice in your Word. Please strengthen these bodies you’ve given us so that we might complete the work you have for us to do.
