And let us
consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not
give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us
encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Hebrews 10:24-25
The seats in a sports stadium are usually
filled with exuberant sport fans. They yell, they cheer, and they stand up when
their team performs well. Some of the fans are wearing the team’s colors,
waving banners, and many have even painted their faces to match the favored
team’s uniforms. This is a loud group, but the noise may diminish if the team
isn’t playing as the fans wish.
What’s all the hoop-la about? We want our
team to win, and we believe that our raucous behavior will be an encouragement
to the players.
As the writer of our Hebrews passage
expresses, we should be spurring our fellow believers. Many of the things that
may seem appropriate in a sports stadium would be disruptive in a gathering of
believers. So, how do we “spur” each other?
Think about it: when you are feeling sad,
lonely, or isolated, doesn’t it encourage you to know that someone really
cares? It may be a verbal message, a written note, or even a hug. An
arrangement of flowers or balloons certainly brightens a dreary day when we
need encouragement.
The New Living Translation begins our passage
of today with Let us think of ways of
motivate one another to acts of love and good works. Do you already have
someone in your mind? Yeah for you! If you are raring to go, how about setting
a number goal? When you have reached your goal, would you go on and on and on?
Oh, and get ready to count your blessings.
