LOVE

“..to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”
Ephesians 3:18b-19


Imagine my surprise when a 5 year old exclaimed, “I can make love!” Interested to hear that story I just had to ask how he would “make” love. Without a single hesitation he spouted, “L-O-V-E.” 

I could not help but to giggle a little bit. Yes, he had “spelled” love, not “made love.” He was so thrilled by his accomplishment. Who was I to try and correct his terminology?  

Many people can spell love, define it, discuss it, and sing about it. But what about really putting it into practice?

When I think about true love, my grandmother comes to mind. It did not bother her if we picked our noses, got hot and sweaty while playing, or took cookies from the cookie jar when we thought no one was looking. She loved us anyway. 

She invested her time in us -- telling us stories, making our favorite foods, walking through the woods with us. 

My other grandmother also demonstrated her love for us by making us beautiful quilts. When you received one you knew that she had invested hours and hours in its making. There is nothing like wrapping up in one of those quilts to help you feel better when you are sick or troubled.

Thank goodness we have a loving Father who demonstrates his love for us in the most pure form. He loves us unconditionally and sacrificially. He, too, wants to spend time with us. He is interested in us. He loves us so much that He gave his Son to die for us on the cross for payment for our sins. He loves us forever and for eternity. What an overwhelming thought!

LOVE, why, yes I CAN spell it. By God’s example, I can also try to put it into practice with whomever I might come into contact.
