For they
bring life to those who find them and healing to their whole body.
Proverbs 4:22 NLT
As parents we teach our kids many things: Spend
your money wisely – Hang around friends with good attitudes – Obey authority –
Love others – and especially, Love God.
We want to guard them from slipping off the good
path!
In Proverbs 4, Solomon gathers his sons around him
and tells them that when he was a boy, his father, David, taught him these
things:
Don’t let
my words slip from your sight; guard them in your mind. For they bring life to
those who find them and healing to their whole body. Above all else, guard your
heart, for it determines the course of your life (Proverbs
4:21-23 NLT).
How do I guard my heart?
A few years back, I suffered with panic attacks
that many nights woke me up in fear. But I learned to turn them around by
meditating on what I wanted most – peace of mind! I wrote down verses that
mentioned “peace” and said them over and over so that my heart could receive
them.
The Lord
God speaks peace to me (Psalm 85:8).
In peace
I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe (Psalm
4:8).
May the
Lord of peace himself give me his peace in every situation (2 Thess.
3:16).
You keep
me in perfect peace because my mind is stayed on You (Isaiah
26:3).
Like a medicine, peace came over me and I went back
to sleep. His peace was guarding my heart!
Our minds are a battleground each day, and we have
the choice of staying in negative thought patterns or choosing life and health
by stating what God says about us and about His power to change us!
Father, thank You for the power of Your words that
lifts me out of trouble and restores me with life and health!
