For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
Psalm 91:11, 13
What a day! The warm sun on my face. The smell of spring flowers. The snake on the road. At least it has been flattened and killed by a car, I thought. My dog and I passed by it within a few inches. I marveled at the snake’s interesting markings.
I turned back to look at it more closely. As I leaned over, I thought, I sure hope it’s dead! I picked up a stick just in case. When I looked up, the snake had slithered into the grass.
Thank you, God for your protection! Twice my dog and I were within inches of the snake’s mouth. It could easily have bitten us but it didn’t.
God opened my eyes to His safeguarding from the snake. I wonder how many times a day I walk along unscathed, unaware of impending danger. God’s word says in Psalm 91 that He sends His angels to watch over us. Perhaps an angel closed the mouth of the snake as in Daniel’s story with the lions. Psalm 91 also says we can tread on snakes. I’m glad I didn’t have to!
The world can be a scary place. Until Jesus returns, evil will be present around us. Jesus made provision for us by asking the Father to watch over His followers. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one (John 17:15).
Jesus left us an example to pray for ourselves and others. Deliver us from the evil one (Matthew 6:13). We don’t have to worry when God is on watch.
“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name” (Psalm 91:14)
Thank you, Lord, that I never have to fear because You and Your angels are with me.
