Draw Near

Come near to God and He will come near to you.
James 4:8

Imagine that! The Lord God Almighty, Creator of the universe wants me (of all people) to be close to Him. He wants to draw near to me. I don’t know about you, but that brings tears to my eyes and breaks my heart for all the times I have ignored Him in my busyness. I’m talking THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY!!!!

How can I draw nearer to God? By having, like David, an unfiltered open dialogue with Him. Knowing God can handle the good, the bad, and the ugly of my life when I tell Him about it.

What should my position before God be when I draw near to Him? God does not owe me anything. Because He is good, I am in debt to Him.

David’s prayer journal gives us glimpses of his heart position before God.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).

“I love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge” (Psalm 18:1-2).

“I will praise You, O Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonders. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High” (Psalm 9:1-2).

“For the sake of Your name, O Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great” (Psalm 25:11).

What is your heart position before God? Are you trying to put God in the position of owing you something because of all the “good things” you are doing?

David was a man after God’s own heart because of his open, honest prayers, and his heart position before God. He knew he owed God everything and God owed him nothing. He knew it is not because of his goodness that God loved him-----it is because GOD IS GOOD.

Dear Lord God Almighty, You owe me nothing. I owe You everything.
