I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7
For success in both, you need community and consistency.
Some of my exercise classes have been cancelled this month. And I really don’t do well on my own. I need the community of class — or a trainer to keep me accountable.
Before the holidays, I went to at least four classes a week. Not only did that keep me physically fit, my mind stayed in the game. I ate healthy and stayed on track.
During the holidays, I lost my routine for exercise and healthy eating. And my motivation. While I attend two classes a week, I’m eating a handful of candy here, a couple of cookies there and a burger much more often than I used to. It’s easy to backslide: physically and spiritually.
The same is true for spiritual fitness, right? You get out of your Bible study or prayer routine for a day or two. Then before you know it, you’re only reading the Bible at church on Sunday. Or you miss a few services here and there, and you find yourself sleeping in on Sundays instead of going to church.
I Corinthians 15:58 encourages us to stay motivated and enthusiastic in our service to the Lord.
Personally, I can’t do this without community and consistency. To stay spiritually fit, I meet with a friend every week for Bible study. My husband and I teach third-graders with our teen boys every Sunday. Those things keep me consistent and in community.
What keeps you motivated and enthusiastic in your service to the Lord? If you don’t have anything right now, are you willing to try something new?
