Search me, O God,
and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in
me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24
Don’t you just love the beauty of spring time? I
especially enjoy the beautiful flowers as they pop open and the different
shades of green as the trees put on their new leaves. Thank you, God, for
color.
When our grandson, Colin, was about 4 years old, he loved
to help work in the yard. He loved to pull weeds. One day as we weeded, Colin
asked, “Gram, what are weeds?” I explained that weeds are plants that are
unattractive and troublesome. Colin then said, “What would happen if we didn’t
pull out the weeds?” I responded by saying that if we didn’t pull the weeds
regularly, they would “take over” our beautiful flowers.
As we continued our weed pulling that day, I mentally
began to compare a garden to life. Just as weeds grow in our gardens, we allow
“weeds” to grow in our lives—weeds like dishonesty, greed, jealousy, anxiety,
resentment, gossip, worry, pride. I have to admit that I have “weeds” in my
garden of life. If I don’t remove them, they will “take over my life.”
It is difficult for us to face unattractive weeds in our
life--those things which dishonor God.
However, it is necessary that we stand up and face weeds in our life
which mar our testimony and also take away the joy of the Lord. Why not spend
some quiet time with our Father and ask Him to reveal weeds in your life.
Spring is a time of renewal. It brings new leaves, new
blooms, new life. It can also be a
time of spiritual renewal. Maybe you have allowed things to pop up in your life
which are not pleasing to God and to others.
Read our Scripture for today again. We are to ask God to
search our hearts and reveal our offensive ways.
