What we have heard and known, what our
fathers have told us,
We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next
generation.
Psalm
78:3-4
What stories do you remember that you
heard as you were growing up, perhaps during a family gathering? The ones that
I remember are as fresh as yesterday.
My parents were faithful to honor and
respect their parents, so visiting both grandparents was our regular Sunday
afternoon pattern. I don’t
remember much of the casual conversation, but stories from their past were told
over and over.
One story that comes to my mind is not
a verbal story but a visual one. My sister and I would occasionally spend the
night with our grandparents. I
shall never forget seeing my 6’1” grandfather in his long-handled pajamas (year
round attire) opening his Bible and reading to us. After he read, he would get
down on his knees and pray.
Has our fast paced life or distance
robbed us of these precious moments? Do we view the continuing developments of
technology as a hindrance to close relationships? Even if we may not always
think of technology as a benefit, can we be grateful for cell phones and
Skype?
Our scripture tells us to pass on the stories of our own
history, our legacy, and especially how God has worked in our lives. Can you
picture the Hebrew families gathered around to share their day and God’s
provisions for them? Praise God for their faithfulness which ultimately gave us
our Holy Bible.
Open your heart to opportunities to
share how you heard about Jesus and the promise of eternal life. How has God
blessed your life? God will nudge
you when the time is right. He may even whisper an old song in your ear.
“Tell
me the story of Jesus; Write on my heart every word. Tell me the story most
precious, sweetest that ever was heard.”
