Be diligent
to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15
When
my Bible Study group ended for a brief recess, everyone was asked to identify a
prayer request for the group to pray during that time. Would you be surprised
to learn that the majority, in fact almost everyone, asked for prayer that they
would have a regular Quiet Time?
Quiet
time in my understanding is a regular time committed to read, study, pray,
meditate for the purposes of strengthening our relationship with God. While it
may vary from day to day and from one focus to another, the commitment is
critical. Why is it that we can commit to many things, but commitment to a time
alone with our God seems to get away from us?
Let’s
focus on one aspect of a Quiet Time – studying the Bible. All of us have had to
study something at one time or another, so this ought to come easily. It’s a
commitment that requires a decision and action. Like most commitments, we have
to get serious about it.
I
really like going to school, but I finally learned that studying and going to
school are not the same thing. Sad to say, for many years I read my Bible, but
seldom studied it.
When
I really began to study the Bible, I was humbled and amazed at what I
learned. May I encourage you to study
your Bible, not just read it, or wait for your minister to explain it to
you? Partner with someone; enroll in a
Bible study; read one of the many books that give simple and fulfilling ways to
study.
The Amplified Bible
expands 2 Timothy 2:15: Study and be
eager and do your utmost to present yourself approved, a workman who has no cause to be
ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing rightly handling and
skillfully teaching the Word of Truth.
Not suggestions, but a
directive. Action is required.
