Her
children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
Proverbs 31:28-31
This week’s devotionals are based on my grandmother, Charlene Seale, who
went to heaven last month. That’s me in the photo with her above. I was about four years old at the time. It’s one of my favorite photos.
To me, Granny is a shining example of the Proverbs 31 woman. She left an extraordinary legacy by
faithfully completing ordinary tasks.
Granny lived a quiet and humble life. She spent all her 92 years in the same small town. She never drove a
car. She didn’t have to. She always had family members close by who
would take her to church and wherever she needed to go.
She faithfully taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School year after
year. She cooked, cleaned, quilted and gardened, yet somehow she had time to
teach me how to make mud pies.
I spent lots of time at Granny’s house as a child. I learned to wash and
dry dishes, and I thought it was fun! Granny was a great teacher. She didn’t
seem to mind that it might take twice as long with my “help.”
Other times, I simply played on the kitchen floor with the same wooden
blocks that my mom played with. Granny
saved the dishwashing soap bottle tops for me. I pretended they were people.
During the last month, I’ve replayed these and a hundred other memories
over again in my mind.
Then, I realized that my Granny is one of the best examples of
Colossians 3:23-24 that I’ve ever seen. She did all her work for the Lord, and
I somehow could sense that even as a child.
I want to be like her. I want
people to see Jesus through my everyday actions – even if that is folding
laundry.
I have a long way to go.
What are
your everyday actions?
How can
others see Christ through you as you complete your daily work?
