Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
Isaiah 30:21
Recently in a Bible study the teacher asked us if we had ever heard God speak audibly to us. I have to say that I believe I have.
I put on my blinker and got in a turn lane to turn left across traffic. As I did, the cars in the two lanes headed toward me saw the light turn red for the intersection ahead of them. Both drivers decided, since they had to stop anyway, to stop a little sooner and let me turn in front of them.
“Don’t go!” I heard those words as clearly as ever. How ridiculous went through my brain as I turned anyway. My argument with that thought had barely ceased when a car going straight out of the right hand turn lane on the other side of the stopped cars, slammed right into me. I had not seen that car, but I certainly did feel it.
Fortunately, although upset, my daughters and I escaped injury. My vehicle and the one which hit me received the only real damage that day.
I will never let anyone convince me that the words I heard were not from God. I truly believe He had a warning for me – one that I did not heed.
The lesson of that moment will not go unheeded. Obeying God’s voice may cause me to slow down and wait. My impatience may cause me not to like that very much, but in the long run He has my best in mind. I do want to obey His voice.
Lord, teach me to recognize Your voice and walk in Your ways.
